Pirated Key

About 1-2 weeks ago I downloaded the cpb2 in order to play on a map that required it. Then after I was done I tried to connect to the freon server and I was kicked immediately. A message popped up saying I had a pirated key. So I uninstalled the bonus pack and I was no longer being kicked. How does your server check for a pirated key?
