I know there were trials maps with monsters added in place, but there is also a gametype that automatically adds monsters defending objectives in standard assault maps. Keep RPG in place and just make the monsters progressively tougher, ramping up significantly each objective. I think it'd be pretty cool and there's no real effort involved in setting it up besides just configuring a few ini files.
